A pip (Percentage in Point, or Price Interest Point) is the smallest standardized price movement in a forex currency pair. For the vast majority of currency pairs — such as EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and AUD/USD — 1 pip = 0.0001, meaning the 4th decimal place. For currency pairs involving the Japanese Yen (USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY), 1 pip = 0.01, the 2nd decimal place.
Understanding pip value is fundamental to forex risk management. It tells you exactly how much money you gain or lose for each pip the market moves. Without knowing your pip value, you cannot calculate your position size, set a stop-loss correctly, or determine your risk-reward ratio.
For cryptocurrencies, pip definitions vary by broker and platform. BTC/USD typically uses $1 per pip, ETH/USD uses $0.01, and smaller altcoins may use $0.0001. FeelAI's pip calculator automatically applies the correct pip size for every supported instrument.
The pip value formula depends on whether the USD is the quote currency, the base currency, or neither:
Formula 1 — USD is the Quote Currency (e.g. EUR/USD, GBP/USD):
Pip Value = Pip Size × Lot Size (units)
Example: EUR/USD, 1 pip, 1 standard lot → 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10.00
Formula 2 — USD is the Base Currency (e.g. USD/JPY, USD/CHF):
Pip Value = (Pip Size / Exchange Rate) × Lot Size
Example: USD/JPY at 149.50, 1 pip, 1 standard lot → (0.01 / 149.50) × 100,000 = $6.69
Formula 3 — Cross Pairs (e.g. EUR/GBP, GBP/JPY):
Pip Value = (Pip Size / Current Rate) × Lot Size × Conversion Rate to USD
FeelAI's calculator handles all three formulas automatically — just select your pair and enter the current price.
